Graustark (USA), 1963

Error report

If there's any synonym of the "blue blood" in thoroughbred racing, it could very well be Graustark: the son of one of the best horses of the century from the family of champions. Although he never had a chance to fulfill his potential on the racetrack, he had a really big influence on thoroughbred breeding.

Pedigree notes

Graustark's sire was Ribot, a jewel in the production of the legendary Italian breeder Federico Tesio. Ribot was never even entered into the local classic races, but after three years on the racetrack, the Europe was watching the horse unbeaten in 16 starts, who had no equal in the whole Europe. Ribot, the indisputable ruler home in Italy, most notably won two consecutive runnings of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and also the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, all of them easily. Ribot's Timeform rating of 142 still remains the joint fourth best ever, putting him well ahead heroes like Mill Reef or Dancing Brave. As a sire, he was leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland three times and was one of the major influences in thoroughbred breeding in the second half of the 20th century.

By the time when Graustark's racing career started, Ribot was still only 11, but his progeny already included the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Molvedo, Romulus, winner of the Sussex Stakes, the Queen Elizabeth II. Stakes and the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, after the second-place finish in the Two Thousand Guineas; the Santa Anita Derby third Sir Ribot; the Two Thousand Guineas third Corpora; the Irish Derby, the Eclipse Stakes, the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the St. Leger winner Ragusa; the Oaks d'Italia winner Alice Frey; Italian champion and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Prince Royal; the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes second Dapper Dan; the Oaks Stakes winner and the Irish Oaks second Long Look; and the Preakness Stakes winner, the Belmont Stakes second and the Kentucky Derby third, and the champion three-year-old colt Tom Rolfe. What more to say?

By the same time, Graustark's dam Flower Bowl, winner of the Delaware Handicap and the Ladies Handicap, which were both G1 races later, already produced chestnut filly Bowl of Flowers by Sailor - winner of the Frizette Stakes, the Acorn Stakes, the Spinster Stakes and the Coaching Club American Oaks, among others, and both the champion two-year-old filly and the three-year-old filly.

When we look a bit further, Graustark's second dam Flower Bed was the half-sister to the Del Mar Futurity and the Santa Anita Derby winner Your Host, and to the Santa Susana Handicap third Your Hostess. Only two years after Graustark's birth, Your Hostess produced a talented juvenile and the Kentucky Derby third T.V. Commercial; another year later, her grandson Majestic Prince was born - the chestnut colt later lost the Triple Crown when badly defeated by another Ribot son Arts And Letters in the Belmont Stakes. Your Hostess' granddaughter Hippodamia was born in 1971 and earned the honors of the champion 2-year-old filly in France, and later placed in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches; another Your Hostess grandson Caracolero, born the same year, won the Prix du Jockey Club and was considered the best three-year-old in the country. The family never left the top ranks, producing the 1984 Epsom Derby winner Secreto, the 1995 U.S. Triple Crown near-miss Real Quiet, and several Japanese classic horses in the 21st century. Flower Bed's own branch didn't make that much noise, but Graustark's younger full brother His Majesty became North American leading sire in 1982; and the Derby Italiano winner of 1989 Prorutori aside, there are two more interesting names: the popular filly Groupie Doll, double U.S. champion female sprinter from 2012 and 2013, respectively; and another double U.S. champion Songbird, who lost the Breeders' Cup Distaff 2016 only to equally famous Beholder.

Simply - a lot could be expected from Graustark based solely on his pedigree.

As a juvenile, Graustark won only three minor races, but all of them by wide margins. He was never considered to be even close to the top ranks, and he was soon sidelined by a splint injury, which took five months to heal. As a three-year-old, he won his debut at Hialeah Park, which started the series of four victories - a thing that people simply won't miss during the Triple Crown trail. It was well supported by the opinion of Graustark's regular rider Braulio Baeza, who also rode the juvenile champion Buckpasser, winner of 9 out of 11 starts - but still considered Graustark the best horse he has ever ridden. However, Braulio Baeza ended up watching Kauai King winning the Kentucky Derby from the saddle of the fourth-place finisher Stupendous. Buckpasser missed all the Triple Crown races due to a quarter crack, although he later returned in fantastic form and was voted both the champion three-year-old colt and the Horse of the Year. Graustark broke his coffin bone when finishing second in Blue Grass Stakes - the injury which ended his career for good.

At stud

Graustark's brilliance quickly turned into a real stallion power. His first crop included a bay filly Oh So Fair, who not only produced English fillies' Triple Crown winner Oh So Sharp, but also started a family with numerous G1 winners, including the One Thousand Guineas winner Ameerat and the St. Leger winner Shantou.

In his second crop, Graustark had Jim French, who lost both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes to Canonero, and the Belmont Stakes to Pass Catcher. In the fillies' division, Grafitti ran second in the Kentucky Oaks, the Coaching Club American Oaks, and the Mother Goose Stakes - not much recognized, yet a very valuable achievement. It needs to be said that both horses had much more top efforts, as can you can see in the progeny list.

What Jim French wasn't able to do, Key to the Mint managed: although he didn't win any of the Triple Crown races, he stole the championship honors for 1972 season from the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes winner Riva Ridge with his spectacular summer and autumn winning series in the major handicaps. He lost the two-miles long Jockey Club Gold Cup by 15 lengths to the champion older horse Autobiography, but still defeated Riva Ridge in the race; as for Autobiography, he beat him two times in the Brooklyn Handicap and the Woodward Stakes.

However, Graustark grabbed some of the Triple Crown glory with grey colt Ruritania, who ran second in the Belmont Stakes; he later matured into a good turf runner. And finally, another member of the crop was Prove Out, who won the Woodward Stakes as a four-year-old over Secretariat in a very well-known story. While Jim French had his share of G1 winners, but nothing more, Key to the Mint went on to become the best sire by Graustark, with champions Plugged Nickle and Jewel Princess and also numerous successful horses from his daughters' families, including Seaside Attraction, Fantastic Light, Swain, Soaring Softly, Inside Information and great Japanese broodmare Dancing Key.

Foals of 1970 brought mostly some handicap and turf glory, and Graustark's first classic winner was finally born from the crop of 1971. Caracolero won the Prix du Jockey Club in France as an outsider, but still, it was the performance which established him the joint-top French 3-year-old at the end of the season. Avatar finally broke the bad luck in American classics a year later, as he won the Belmont Stakes and turned the tables with Foolish Pleasure, who defeated him in the Derby. But once again, the championship title for this season went to the late bloomer Wajima.

Not only that Graustark's granddaughters started to hit G2 successes from 1972; a future broodmare star Glowing Tribute was born in 1973. The granddaughter of great Searching, whose own granddam was legendary La Troienne, Glowing Tribute fully lived up to her family tradition, producing not only the Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero (among other successful horses), but also another famous broodmare in Wild Applause, the dam of Eastern Echo and the granddam of Congrats and Flatter.

From 1974 crop, Avatar's full brother Monseigneur was a G1-placed in France. 1975 crop brought one of many G1 successful fillies by Graustark in the champion three-year-old filly Tempest Queen - a bit forgotten name from the year when the championship honors by age were divided among four-year-old Seattle Slew, three-year-old Affirmed, and two-year-old Spectacular Bid. From 1977 crop, Graustark had top fillies of their generation in Erin's Word and Love Sign; the latter won or placed in no less than 10 G1 races while competing against fillies like Genuine Risk, Bold n'Determined, Relaxing, Jameela or Christmas Past. As for England, Our Home from the same crop placed in the One Thousand Guineas.

1978 crop was very successful in Great Britain, when Protection Racket won the Irish St. Leger; more importantly, Graustark's grandson Bel Bolide was the top juvenile, running second in the Middle Park Stakes, and matured into the top miler with the third-place finishes in both the Two Thousand Guineas and the St. James's Palace Stakes. Another grandson Glint of Gold was defeated in the Epsom Derby only by mighty Shergar and added the second place from the St. Leger and victory from the Grand Prix de Paris. In the meantime, Leap Lively ran third in the Epsom Oaks, while Glint of Gold's full brother Diamond Shoal, member of 1979 crop, still had a lot of time to mature into his brilliant four-year-old form, winning three G1 races in three different countries on the European continent. He lost the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes only to champion filly Time Charter by less than a length, but still won the honors of top-rated European older male.

The Preakness Stakes third High Honor was born in 1980, while the granddaughter Dontstop Themusic from the same crop was another brave female top warrior for Graustark. Once again, 1981 was a year for future broodmare superpower, when G1-placed Wild Applause was born as a sole memorable member.

However, 1982 was one of the Graustark's best crops ever with five G1 winners. American classic hopes were carried by Proud Truth, winner of the Florida Derby and fifth from the Kentucky Derby after a rough trip. He won the Peter Pan Stakes in his tuneup for the Belmont Stakes, but was sidelined subsequently with the injury; he returned just in the right time to defeat a strong field in the second running of the Breeders' Cup Classic. In the meantime, Oh So Sharp not only won three classic races in Great Britain on her way to the title of the champion three-year-old filly, but also added runner-up finishes in the Benson And Hedges Gold Cup and the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes; the funny fact is that in both these defeats she beat a future Prix de l'Arc winner in the third place.

1983 was the second and the last crop where three generations were fighting for Graustark on top level: his daughter Steal a Kiss ran on the board in G1 races seven times; his grandson El Cuite won the Prix Royal Oak, his granddaughter Tiffany Lass won the Kentucky Oaks on her way to Eclipse Award for the champion three-year-old filly, and his great-grandson Waquoit matured into the top handicap horse, winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Brooklyn Handicap and running third in the Breeders' Cup Classic behind Alysheba and Seeking the Gold.

Despite the fact that Graustark was never pensioned and bred mares until his death in 1988, he didn't produce any other major runner from the subsequent crops.

But his daughters still did. Pay the Butler was the top American turf runner and won the second running of the Japan Cup over two Japanese Horses of the Year in Tamamo Cross and Oguri Cap. Forest Flower not only won championship honors for the top English juvenile filly in 1986, but she also added the Irish 1000 Guineas victory the following spring. The year 1985 brought another storm of talented runners with Graustark's blood: he had no less than three colts on the Triple Crown trail - Brian's Time won the Florida Derby, Kingpost the Jim Beam Stakes and Primal ran second in the Arkansas Derby. Brian's Time was beaten in the Preakness by Risen Star, but defeated Winning Colors; as for the Belmont Stakes, he ran third behind Risen Star again, and was defeated for second by no one else than Kingpost. Primal matured into a very good handicap horse, with the victory in the Donn Handicap and the runner-up efforts in the Oaklawn and the Gulfstream Park Handicaps. The same crop included the U.S. champion turf horse Sunshine Forever, the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes third Assatis, and already sixth major American female runner in Aptostar. There are two more things to say about this crop: its member was also Blushing John, grandson of Graffiti - winner of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, and the U.S. champion older horse next year. And finally, Brian's Time was retired to stud in Japan, becoming one of the top local sires; his progeny includes Horses of the year Narita Brian and Mayano Top Gun.

Only briefly for the rest of the crops - it's worth saying that Graustark's influence goes as far as 2016, spanning no less than 43 years, at least so far. Let's name the St. Leger winner Michelozzo, a great turf runner Bien Bien, the Kentucky Derby and the Travers Stakes winner Sea Hero, the European champion three-year-old filly and simultaneously the champion U.S. grass mare Ryafan, the Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Reraise, top German filly Catella, G1-winning sprinter Mozart or sire Mizzen Mast. The youngest member of this contingent is Time And Motion, the winner of the Queen Elizabeth II. Challenge Cup Stakes G1 2016.
