Ribot's Line in the United States

Error report

Darby Dan leased Ribot to stand in the United States for five years. But his temper enforced a revision of the original contract, and he stayed in the U.S. for the rest of his life. Ribot died at the age of 20 after 12 breeding seasons, and he left his best sons there. The Preakness Stakes winner Tom Rolfe was born in 1962, brilliant Graustark in 1963, and Graustark's full brother His Majesty in 1968. Graustark has an own profile here on the website, and his line became the widest, but also disappeared as the first one. Both Tom Rolfe and his son Hoist the Flag became influential broodmare sires. Alleged, a son of Hoist the Flag and another double Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner just like Ribot, inherited the same disposition. Many of his ancestors became national hunt horses, as well as progeny of his European son Law Society.

His Majesty's branch was able to survive to the 21st century, but its greatest star Pleasant Colony was, without much of a surprise, another excellent broodmare sire. Still, the line looked very well for a while. His son Pleasant Tap was voted the champion older horse, and Go For Gin by Cormorant won the Kentucky Derby and placed in the other two legs of the Triple Crow. Their sons were great runners too, as Pleasantly Perfect won the Breeders' Cup Classic, and Albert the Great ran third in the race. Unfortunately, none of them seems to be a talented sire, and it looks like the end of the Ribot's dynasty.

No sireline can survive without strong sires of sires. This problem aside, Ribot and his sons had another one: too tough competition. Ribot's stud career was almost identical to Bold Ruler's, and Northern Dancer joined the "team" soon after. Ribot's sons met Nashua, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and European members of Nasrullah's line, as well as the first sons of Northern Dancer. Stallions from the Ribot's line became damsires of Majestic Light, Cryptoclearance, Forty Niner, Dynaformer, Brian's Time, or Danehill. They only couldn't keep the tail-male talent for themselves.
